WebThe Heaphy Track takes you on a journey through all of this incredible terrain. It may be the longest of all the Great Walks but if you’re up for it, it’s definitely worth every kilometre. The track started out as part of a network of routes Maori used to reach the west coast for collecting the highly prized “pounamu” or greenstone. WebAll Great Walks can be done from October to April when the trails are generally snow and ice-free. Routes in lower altitudes are usually accessible year-round, such as the Heaphy Track and Abel Tasman Coast Track. Currently, the Milford Track and Routeburn Track are temporarily closed due to flooding in early 2024.
